Keith A. Kaufman, Ph.D.

Dr. Keith A. Kaufman is a licensed psychologist and Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC®) with expertise in clinical and sport psychology.

He received his B.A. in both Psychology and Exercise & Sport Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and was the recipient of the Patrick F. Earey Award to the outstanding Exercise & Sport Science major in 2002.  

Dr. Kaufman obtained his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 2008 from Catholic University.  He did his predoctoral internship at Virginia Tech where he trained under the Athletic Department's sport psychologist and received the American College Counseling Association special commendation for meritorious service following the 2007 shootings.  

Dr. Kaufman remained involved at Catholic as a Research Associate for over a decade.  He was the co-director of a sport psychology research lab in the Psychology Department, and taught an undergraduate Sport Psychology course.  His research centered on Mindful Sport Performance Enhancement (MSPE)®, the influential sport psychology program he co-developed. His MSPE work has now expanded with the establishment of the MSPE Institute in 2019 and his role as CEO. Dr. Kaufman has published numerous articles and chapters on MSPE, he is the lead author of Mindful Sport Performance Enhancement: Mental Training for Athletes and Coaches, and he co-hosts the Mindful Sport Performance Podcast.

Dr. Kaufman is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, and is Vice President of the Mid-Atlantic Consortium for Sport & Performance Psychology.  He is a co-founder of the DC Psyching Team, providing on-site mental skills training to runners at Washington, DC’s Marine Corps Marathon, and is the team sport psychologist for Loudoun United Football Club.
